Traceable from sea to fork

Every pack is traceable to the very boat and voyage it was caught on. Your steaks were caught in the Indian Ocean by the Galerna Lau, fishing free-swimming schools of yellowfin: FAD-free, MSC certified.

The boat Galerna Lau

A tuna purse seiner from the Basque fleet Albacora, out of the fishing town of Bermeo and now registered in Mauritius. She fishes free-swimming schools: no rafts, no shortcuts.

What does FAD-free mean?

A FAD is a fish aggregating device: a floating raft that fish gather under. Setting a net around one is the easy way to fill a boat, but it scoops up whatever has gathered, young tuna and other species included.

Most boats: the net goes around a FAD. Everything under the raft comes up with the tuna.
WILD’R: a free school. Grown yellowfin, found swimming in open water, and only them.

A FAD-free set means the crew found a free-swimming school of adult yellowfin in open water and set the net on that school alone. It takes more searching and more skill, and it means far fewer unwanted catches.

Thunnus albacares: big, fast, nearly warm-blooded, and a long way from the stuff in tins. Tap the markers to find out what makes it a yellowfin.

As long as a bath. As heavy as a Labrador. A proper adult. Free-swimming schools are mostly big fish like this, one reason to fish them rather than a FAD.
